    Read Across America Poem

You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild,
To pick up a book and read with a child.
You’re never too busy, too cool, or too hot,

To pick up a book and share what you’ve got.

    In schools and communities,
    Let’s gather around,
    Let’s pick up a book,

    Let’s pass it around.
There are kids all around you,
    Kids who will need

    Someone to hug,
    Someone to read.
    Come join us March 1st

    Your own special way
    And make this America’s
    Read to Kids Day.

    Earth Day

Bacon Free Library took part in the very well attended Earth Day Fair in the Commons at Natick Center on a cold but sunny Sunday, April 21st. It was a natural. Books and even e-books are re-use/multi-use items. Many books are printed on recycled paper. More and more library based resources like subscription databases, electronic catalogs and website features are paperless. Bacon Free Library has all kinds of adult and kids books about helping the environment and celebrating Earth Day. Below, BFL Director John Brisbin displays an assortment of these below.  Lots of library loving friends dropped by too.

    Bridging Generations

Tuesday, June 4, from 6:30-7:30 pm

Register for Marjorie Turner Hollman's "Bridging Generations” workshop on writing down personal and family stories.  Arrive early. Space is limited. Those interested should bring a family member.  A five year old grandchild can bring a grandparent. A teen or an adult can bring a parent. A great grandparent can bring any relation he or she wants.

"In pairs, at the workshop," Marjorie says, “we practice interviewing back and forth. We learn to ask open-ended questions. We use active listening techniques. I can give you great story-starter questions.  Expect to surprise yourself with the stories that come to mind,” she warns playfully, “the stories you hear and the stories that bridge generations.”

When the stories are written down and done at the end of the one hour workshop, Marjorie will give the pairs the information they need to self-publish inexpensively so they can be shared with other family members. “Adding these kind of personal stories to the photo album snapshots we usually collect in families brings MANY dimensions and connections,” she said.

“When your child asks ‘Why?’ wouldn’t you like to stop the endless cycle of explanations and learn what she is really thinking? When a family member responds to ‘How was your day?’ with just that one annoying word, ‘ Fine,’  don’t you wish he’d tell you the real story?  Come to the workshop. I can help.”

Marjorie Turner Hollman is a personal historian, professional storyteller, long-time freelance writer and skilled listener. She is the Coordinator for the Southern New England Chapter of the Association of Personal Historians (APH). Increasing generational connections gives her great joy. Come join her! "The April 30th 'Welcome to the Graveyard' program presented by Bacon Free Library and the Natick Historic Society, and supported by a grant from Natick Cultural Council, was an enormous success," said Bacon's Library Director John Brisbin. "We had a capacity crowd in the library to see Gravestone Girls' Brenda Sullivan's Power Point on what our local and area cemeteries can tell us about ourselves 1651 to the present."

"A ton of people arrived early," Brisbin said. Many had to stand or else sit in the library's window seat in the very back; and no one wanted to leave even at 9:30 pm!"

Brisbin said a follow up field trip with Brenda Sullivan from The Gravestone Girls is being planned for Saturday morning, June 1st starting at Bacon Free Library at 10 AM. Those interested should register on the link or call 508 653 6730.  Reach the Gravestone Girls at http://gravestonegirls.com.

STORIES FOR PRESCHOOLERS: Wednesdays AND Fridays at 10 AM.
No registration required. Walk-ins are welcome!
Stories on many subject areas are being planned by dynamic Children’s Librarian Holley Meyer.

Holley is hard at work planning stories about:
bears and hibernation on January 16 and 18; polar bears on January 23 and 25; ground hog day on January 30 and February 1; on Chinese New Year on February 6 and 8; on Valentine’s Day February 13 and 15. Parents of preschoolers, please share your concerns about your child’s reading readiness with Holley.  She can help.

Children’s Librarian Holley Meyer’s Simple Reading Readiness Advice for Parents

Read to your child-- Read something to him or her every day. Take a book with you wherever you go so, if there's down time, you two (or more) can open the book and get involved in a story. Bacon Free Library has an excellent collection of audio books for kids. They're great for long car rides.

Sing to your child -- Sing things that rhyme like nursery rhymes. Sing lullabies. Clap hands. Develop rhythm.

Talk to your child -- Use a good vocabulary. Pronounce words correctly and completely.  Use complete sentences.

Holley can recommend further resources for parents and for parent and child to use together.  talk to her.
